Security, content protection and content rights are important topics in the IPTV industry. Throughout the years, we were witness of a rapid increase in online piracy of commercially marketed material, which proliferated through the widespread use of peer-to-peer file exchange programs. In order to solve mentioned issues operators needed to cooperate with digital rights management (DRM) which enabled a systematic approach to copyright protection for digital media. The purpose of DRM is to prevent unauthorized redistribution of digital media and restrict the ways consumers can copy content they’ve purchased. The Beenius Interactive TV Platform integrates with different DRM providers, such as Verimatrix being one of them, when operators want to distribute premium content.
But as no content should be unsecured, the Beenius Platform supports a Token-based Content Security Mechanism. Our mechanism ensures basic conditional access functionality that is achieved by the authorization of client devices, thus allowing access to content only to authorized subscribers. It can be used as an alternative to other systems for controlling access to content. Content is limited to content served by HTTP servers (OTT content, either live TV streams or VOD/recordings content). All content can be separately secured with a token, which is generated based upon the information received from the client application (e.g. content ID, client device IP, etc.) and is returned to the client application as a URL. The token is only valid for a limited period of time, e.g. 24 hours so even the same subscriber (client application) has to request the token again after a configured time. Besides the token itself, the URL also includes the content server IP, the content file name, the expiration time point, etc. Token is generated and issued per subscriber, so even if the token is intercepted it cannot be used for another subscriber.
